French Fried Onions

These onions are so delicious and easy. They are great to top casseroles and enjoy as a side to main dishes. These seem so much more thoughtful than the store-bought kind. You and you're guests will be so pleased that you spent a little extra time to give them something homemade.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large white onion
  • 1 1/2 cups cornstarch
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • canola oil

Directions:

  1. Peel and thinly slice the onion into half-rings
  2. Add buttermilk to a shallow bowl and set aside.
  3. Mix together cornstarch and seasoned salt in a shallow bowl. Set aside.
  4. Dip onion slices in buttermilk, then in cornstarch mixture, coating well. Transfer them to a large cookie sheet. Repeat until all onions are coated.
  5. Fill a medium saucepan about halfway full with canola oil. Heat to 350 F.
  6. Have a plate lined with a few paper towels to the side for draining onions.
  7. Working in batches, drop onions into heated oil. Cook 2-5 minutes until golden, stirring occasionally. Use a slotted spoon to remove the onions from the oil, and transfer to paper towels. Repeat until all onions have been fried.
  8. Enjoy!
